How to remix a game and make it your own
Many games on Oddgrounds are open for anyone to remix: you get a copy of the whole game to change however you like, and the original creator is credited on your game's page. It's the quickest way to make something good.
Pick a game you'd play again
Start from a game whose core feels good to you: the jump, the shot, the merge. You'll change everything around it, but a solid core saves hours.
Change the look first
A new art style and a new hero make a game feel like yours straight away. Then change the rules: a new trap, a new goal, a different ending.
- Swap the palette and the characters.
- Change one rule that shifts how people play.
- Rename it and write your own description.
How credit works
Your game's page always credits the game it came from, and the original shows its whole family of versions. The original's creator also earns a royalty from what versions of their game earn, so opening a game to others grows its audience instead of splitting it.
Make it more than a reskin
The versions people remember change how the game plays, not just how it looks. Try flipping one assumption: the hunter becomes the hunted, the timer counts up instead of down, the floor is the enemy. Play the original for a few minutes first and write down the one moment you'd do differently; that's usually the change worth making.
Keep what works. If the original's controls feel great, leave them alone and spend your changes on levels, goals and style.
Share it
Publish your version, send the link, and add a line about what you changed. People love seeing how the same idea turns out in different hands, and the original's creator is notified when you publish, so it's a friendly way to say you liked their game.
