The short version
- We collect what we need to run Oddgrounds: your username, email, password (scrambled), date of birth, the games you make and what you post.
- When you use the AI builder, your messages, pictures and game files go to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI, so it can build your game. We ask you before your first build.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or track you across other sites or apps. There are no third-party analytics or ad tools on Oddgrounds or in the app.
- You need to be 13 or older to make an account. For people under 18, cash payouts go through a parent or guardian.
- You can delete your account any time on your account page. For anything else, write to support@oddgrounds.com.
1. About this policy
Link to this section: About this policyOddgrounds is run by Bonneville Solutions (“we”, “us”), 276 Widow Sweets Rd, Exeter, RI 02822, USA. This policy explains what information we collect when you use oddgrounds.com, the Oddgrounds app, and the games and tools on them (together, “Oddgrounds”), what we do with it, and the choices you have. It goes with our Terms of Service.
We've tried to write it so anyone 13 or older can follow it. If something isn't clear, ask us.
2. What we collect
Link to this section: What we collectWhen you sign up
- Username
- Your public name on Oddgrounds. We ask you not to use your real name.
- Email address
- For your account and to contact you about it. It's never shown to other people.
- Password
- Stored only in scrambled (hashed) form. We can't see it.
- Date of birth
- To check you're old enough (13+) and to apply the rules for people under 18. Other people never see it, and games only ever learn whether a player is a teen or an adult.
If you're under 13, we don't create an account and we don't keep what you typed. We remember on your device, for a day, that signing up didn't work, so the form can't simply be tried again.
When you use Oddgrounds
- Games you make
- Your games' files, versions, titles, descriptions, levels, and your settings such as whether others may remix them.
- Builder chats
- What you write to the AI builder, the pictures you attach, and the builder's replies.
- What you post
- Comments, ratings, reports, follows, blocks, jam entries and votes.
- Play
- Which games you play, for how long (games send a small “still playing” signal every 15 seconds), scores, saves, achievements and daily challenge results. This is how leaderboards work and how creator earnings are split.
- Game events
- Games can record simple events, like finishing a level. When we test two versions of a button or label, we record which one you saw and whether you used it.
- Credits and payments
- Your credit balance and history, your plan, and payment records from Stripe (what you bought, when, and whether it worked). We never see or store your full card number.
- Creator earnings
- Your earnings and payouts, and your Stripe payout account. For creators under 18, the name and email of the parent or guardian who owns the payout account, and when they gave consent.
- Jam prizes
- If you win a jam prize, how you'd like to be paid, whether a tax form is needed, and a parent or guardian's consent if you're under 18.
- Email preferences
- Which emails you want, and a record of the emails we sent.
Collected automatically
- Sign-in sessions
- When you sign in, we store a session with your device's browser or app name (its “user agent”) and a scrambled version of your internet (IP) address, so we can spot misuse. We don't store your IP address itself.
- Security and rate limits
- We use a scrambled version of your IP address to stop spam, attacks and password guessing.
- Server logs
- Our servers log each request (the page or action, whether it worked, how long it took, and your account ID if you're signed in). These logs are kept by Cloudflare for a limited time.
- Last active
- When you last used Oddgrounds.
We don't ask for your photo, phone number, address, contacts or location, and games can't access your camera, microphone or location.
3. How we use it
Link to this section: How we use it- To run Oddgrounds: your account, the builder, publishing and playing games, leaderboards, comments, jams and credits.
- To keep people safe: checking age, moderating content, handling reports, blocking, and stopping spam, cheating and fraud.
- To pay creators: working out earnings from play time, and paying them (through a parent or guardian for people under 18).
- To send emails you can control, like a weekly summary of how your games are doing, and emails we must send, like asking a parent or guardian for consent.
- To fix bugs and improve Oddgrounds, using our own records (not third-party analytics).
- To follow the law, like tax and payment rules, and to respond to legal requests.
We don't sell your personal information, we don't show ads, and we don't share your information with advertisers or data brokers.
If the law where you live (for example in the EU or UK) asks us to name a legal reason for using your information, ours are: to provide the service you asked for (our terms); our legitimate interests in keeping Oddgrounds safe, working and fair; following the law; and your consent where we ask for it.
4. The AI builder and Anthropic
Link to this section: The AI builder and AnthropicThe builder is powered by Claude, an AI made by Anthropic. When you build or change a game, we send Anthropic, through its API:
- your messages to the builder;
- pictures you attach to a message (PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF, up to 5 MB each);
- your game's files, error messages from your game, and screenshots the builder takes while it tests your game.
We ask first. Before your first build, on the site or in the app, we tell you this and ask you to agree. We keep the time you agreed, and the builder doesn't run for your account until you do. If you don't agree, you can still play games, comment and use everything else.
We don't send your email, date of birth or password to the builder. Please don't put personal information in your messages, pictures or games.
We also use Claude to check content for safety: usernames, game titles and text, comments, levels, builder messages and attached pictures.
Anthropic handles this information to provide its service to us. Under its commercial terms, it doesn't use what we send through its API to train its AI models.
If you use voice input in the builder, your browser or phone turns your speech into text (using its own speech service, such as Apple's or Google's). Only the text comes to us.
5. What other people can see
Link to this section: What other people can see- Your profile: username, generated avatar, when you joined, your published games and their stats (plays, remixes, followers), and jam badges.
- Your published games, with your username as the creator. Remixes show which game they came from.
- Your comments and leaderboard scores, with your username and avatar.
- Your ratings aren't shown one by one; games only show an average.
- Your drafts, builder chats, email, date of birth, credits and earnings are private.
In multiplayer games, other players see your username and avatar. There's no free-text chat between players, only preset phrases and emotes.
8. The Oddgrounds app
Link to this section: The Oddgrounds app- The app keeps your sign-in token in your phone's secure storage (the iOS Keychain), only on that device. It isn't backed up to iCloud.
- The app has no tracking, advertising or analytics tools, and it doesn't ask to track you across other companies' apps.
- The app doesn't use your camera, microphone, contacts, location or Face ID.
- Games in the app run the same sandboxed way as on the website, and the app tells our site that it's the app so it can hide things the stores don't allow.
9. Emails
Link to this section: Emails- If you have published games, we may send a weekly email about how they're doing. You can turn it off with the link in any email or in your email settings.
- If you're under 18 and set up creator payouts, we email the parent or guardian you name to ask for their consent.
- We may email you about your account, payments or important changes to our terms.
10. How long we keep things
Link to this section: How long we keep things- Your account information, games and builder chats: while your account is open.
- Published games: they stay up, and their published versions are kept, even after you unpublish them, so remix credit and ownership records stay correct.
- Sign-in sessions expire after 30 days.
- Payment, payout and tax records: as long as the law requires (often several years).
- Moderation records and reports: as long as we need them to keep Oddgrounds safe and deal with repeat problems.
- Server logs: a limited time, set by Cloudflare.
- Multiplayer room data: deleted when the room ends.
11. Deleting your account
Link to this section: Deleting your accountYou can delete your account at any time on your account page, on the website or in the app. You'll need your password. If you pay for a plan, we cancel it first. Then:
- We remove your username, email, password and bio, and sign you out everywhere, in the app too.
- Your profile disappears, and your comments and leaderboard scores are hidden.
- Games you published stay up, under a placeholder name instead of your username, so players and remixes aren't left with a broken link.
- Some records stay attached to the anonymous account, without your name or email: your date of birth, games and drafts, builder chats and pictures, play history, and payment, earnings and moderation records we need to keep.
Deleting can't be undone. If you want us to remove more of what's left, write to support@oddgrounds.com and we'll do what the law allows.
12. Your choices and rights
Link to this section: Your choices and rightsDepending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- see the personal information we have about you and get a copy of it (including your games);
- correct it if it's wrong;
- delete it (see above);
- object to or limit how we use it, or withdraw consent you gave;
- complain to your local data protection authority.
To do any of these, write to support@oddgrounds.com from the email on your account. We may need to check it's really you. We'll answer within the time the law sets (usually within a month) and won't treat you differently for asking. A parent or guardian can make a request for someone under 18.
13. Children and teens
Link to this section: Children and teens- Oddgrounds accounts are for people 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that someone under 13 has an account, we'll delete it. If you think that's happened, write to us.
- Anyone can play games without an account. When nobody's signed in, games treat the player as a teen.
- For people under 18: our safety checks always block sharing personal information, there's no private messaging, and multiplayer only allows preset phrases.
- Cash payouts and jam prizes for people under 18 need a parent or guardian's consent and go to the parent or guardian's account.
14. Keeping your information safe
Link to this section: Keeping your information safeWe use HTTPS everywhere, store passwords and sign-in tokens only in scrambled (hashed) form, keep games in a sandbox on a separate website, and limit who on our team can see personal information. No system is perfectly secure, though. If you think your account isn't safe, write to support@oddgrounds.com. If we learn of a breach that affects you, we'll tell you as the law requires.
15. Changes to this policy
Link to this section: Changes to this policyWe'll update this policy when Oddgrounds changes. We'll change the date at the top, and if a change matters, we'll tell you on the site or by email before it takes effect.
16. Contact us
